CHAPS
Clearance House Automated Payment System or CHAPS. A Telegraphic Transfer system which makes withdrawals and deposits for your UK investment accounts.
Compound Interest
Interest earned on interest which has already been added to your original investment.
AER
The Annual Equivalent Rate or AER shows the interest rate if interest was paid and added each year.
BACS
Bank Automated Clearing System or BACS is an electronic transfer system which allows you to make withdrawals and deposits.
Capitalised Interest
The interest your capital investment has earned, which is then added to your original investment.
Capital
Your original investment amount.
An account whereby you can take out money with no penalty.
Maturity
The end of an investment term. Maturity Value is the value of the combination of capital and interest at the end of the investment term.
Net Interest
Interest paid after the tax on the interest has been taken out.
Notice Account
An account whereby you have to give notice, usually 30 or 60 days, before you can take out your money.
Offshore Investment
Investments lodged offshore and/or outside the UK.
Section 352 Certificate
This is a document showing the amount of interest your savings account has earned and tax paid.
Deposit Account
A deposit account is an account which does not confer membership rights.
Financial Services Compensation Scheme
The Financial Services and Markets Act in 2000 produced the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It protects your investment if the Building Society are not able to repay it.
Form R85
Non tax-payers complete this form for their interest to be payed as gross.
Year End
The end of the accounting year.
Gross Interest
Before the deduction of tax this is the amount of interest.
ISA
Individual Savings Account or commonly known as ISA is a tax efficient savings account replacing PEPs and TESSAs.
